Engines

The main engines of this vessel are Volvo Penta TAMD 71A diesels with a rating of 286 bhp at 2,200 rpm. The engines drive through ZF MPM 301 reverse reduction gearboxes onto 50 mm 316 stainless steel tailshafts. The gearbox reduction ratio is 1.5:1.

The tailshafts run in water lubricated cutlass bearings and have packed stern glands. The 3 bladed Equipoise propellers are handed, in made from aluminium bronze.

The starboard main engine provides drive for the Jabsco bilge pump, which draws through a dedicated bilge suction valve chest.

There is in addition a spare engine, which has been completely rebuilt by Volvo agents and will be offered as a negotiable extra to the sale of the vessel.

Construction

This vessel was built by Halmatic on their standard Nelson 40 dull in 1977 for service in Ireland. The vessel was subsequently bought back by Halmatic in 1991 and completely rebuilt from the keel up to comply with the new pilot boat regulations that came into effect around that time.

The hull is of a semi displacement form, which has been proven worldwide to be exceptionally sea kindly, and has the ability to be pushed at high speed through poor weather conditions. The hull is very heavily fendered all round with rubber “D” section fendering.

The vessel is twin screw being conventionally driven by two 286 bhp diesels. This configuration allows for a very high degree of manoeuvrability and speed.

Seating is provided in the wheelhouse for 10 passengers plus 2 crew. Alternatively, the wheelhouse can be returned to the pilot boat configuration should this be necessary.

HULL
The hull is heavily constructed of Glass reinforced Plastic having a semi displacement round bilge form. The hull was strengthened around the port and starboard shoulders and within the engine room during the rebuild period by Halmatic in 1991.

The hull is subdivided into 4 compartments:

1/ Fore Peak Access to this compartment is from the forward cabin through a watertight opening. This compartment has a bilge suction from the main engine driven bilge pump plus a dedicated hand pump.

2/ Forward Cabin Access to this compartment is from the wheelhouse via the engine room or through a watertight hatch opening in the casing. The accommodation is fitted with two settee berths. A small toilet compartment is provided to port and a small galley area to starboard with a stainless steel sink and a fresh water supply. A 24 volt kettle is fitted to the galley. Access is provided to the chain locker forward. The forward cabin has a bilge suction from the main engine bilge pump plus a dedicated hand pump.

3/ Engine Room This compartment is accessed from the wheelhouse or the forward cabin through watertight doors. A removable section of casing above allows for the easy removal of either main engine. The engine room is ventilated by means of an electric blower. The engine room is protected from fire by a fitted CO2 inert gas flooding system and an alarm activated by heat sensing detector heads. The bulkheads, deckheads and sides of the engine room are lined with fire retardant and sound proofing material. The Eberspacer central heating unit is housed in this compartment. The compartment has a main engine bilge pump suction and a dedicated hand pump.

4/ Aft Peak This compartment is accessed through hatches in the wheelhouse deck and houses the fuel tanks (port and starboard wing tanks with a capacity of 680 litres each) and main engine starting batteries. Access to the steering gear is made through this compartment. This compartment has a bilge suction from the main engine driven bilge pump plus a dedicated hand pump.

Decking Equipment

The wheelhouse is situated aft and is entered from the aft deck through hinged hardwood doors. The helm position is on the port side of the wheelhouse with all controls and instrumentation to hand. Access to the engine room and forward cabin is through a watertight door on the forward wheelhouse bulkhead. At present, seating is provided in the wheelhouse for 10 passengers on tip-up style seats. This arrangement can easily be removed to allow for the original pilot boat set up to be reinstated.

The CO2 bottles are housed in a locker to the port aft corner of the wheelhouse accessed externally. The starboard aft corner houses a manual “Whale” fire pump.

The whole deck is lined with green “Trackmark” which provides a very durable non-slip surface. There are continuous stainless steel handrails running around the whole of the superstructure.
