MAIN ENGINES
When the designers of this vessel selected the engines they chose Cat as the vessel could be operated anywhere in the world and spares and reliability have to be closely considered. The engines selected were twin Cat 3512B - 1500 BHP (1118Kw) @ 1600 rpm. The power is then transmitted down through the Reinties WAF 663 gearboxes with a 5.571:1 reduction to the shafts and on to the fixed pitch propellers.
These engines have proved to be extremely economical to run and consumed on average 189.8 litres per hour in the harbour when idling. When operating at MCAR at sea, these engines consumed approximately 284.7 litres per hour.
This power allows the ship to comfortably operate at 12 Knots for long voyages.
GEN SETS
To keep spares simple the designers chose to install Cat Gen Sets and they chose twin Cat 3408C rated at 280Kw – 415v – 3 Phase – 50hz for the job. This delivers all the power that is required and also allows for planned maintenance of the engines. On trials, these gensets only use 68.2 litres per hour.
