Engines

MAIN ENGINE
When you manufacture any hovercraft you are faced with a set of variables that applies only to hovercrafts. As well as fuel efficiency, carbon emissions, reliability you also have to consider noise level and endurance in various climates. That is why this vessel has been designed to use tried and tested engines from Austria the STEYR M16 SCI 6 cylinder engines each rated at 200kW. These engines are water cooled, turbo charges and intercooled.

The 6 cylinders with their 85mm Bore x 94mm Stroke operate at 4000rpm delivering a max torque of 610 @ 1800rpm. Each engine can be run independently of the other. The Hovercraft can operate using one engine alone, providing lift and thrust. The engines are manufactured by Steyr Motors in Austria and are used in Military Vehicles as well as marine craft. Each Engine is Supplied with a Euro Certificate of Quality. Accepted by DNV.

Exhaust System: The exhaust system consists of two Stainless steel silencers and two stainless steel resonators. These are wrapped in heat shielding material to prevent an increase in engine room temperatures. The Silencers also reduce the noise level to below 80Db at 20 Metres.

Lift Fan: Two 450mm backward inclined centrifugal fans provide the lift. The casing of which is manufactured from E glass. The impeller and shaft is stainless steel. Two small piston hydraulic motors drive each of the fans. The speed of the fans can be varied and a tachometer is fitted to each of the fans so that the speed can be monitored at the helm station.

Hydraulic System: Two parker Hannifin variable displacement pumps are fitted to each diesel engine. The pumps have the ability to supply a constant flow of hydraulic fluid irrespective of engine speed. This mean that the lift fan motor speed can be set independent of engine speed. This provides enormous flexibility in operation and control over the lift fans.

Engine Room: The engine room is insulated with noise absorbing material and surface is coated with fire retardant gel coat. There is cladding on the engine room walls that provides a 30 minute fire rating so as to comply with classification society rules. There are two 3-kilogram Co2 fire extinguishers mounted at the entrance to the engine room.

Bilge System: Two high flow automatic electric bilge pumps are fitted in the engine room rated at 75 lts/m. Warning lights are illuminated on the bridge when in operation. A sump in the engine room collects oily water. This can then be dispensed once in dry dock

Fuel Capacity 800 litres Diesel. Four fuel tanks are fitted to the Hovercraft two forward in the craft port and starboard and two toward the stern of the craft both port and Starboard. Each tank is 200 litres in size and high speed transfer pumps allow this fuel to be move at will in these tanks to trim the craft. Shut of valves are fitted to the tanks and can be operated from the bridge.

Shut Down Features: Loss of oil pressure, Overheating, and Low water level will cause the engine to reduce power and or shut the engine down. Warning alarms will appear on the helm station.

On Board Power: 12-volt battery power, bank of 4 batteries, charged by engine alternators 28V 100 Amp hour each. Battery isolators are fitted to two batteries when the craft is stopped so that the starting Batteries are not used..

Accomodation

This vessel is designed to be used as an offshore transport system where the main aim is to arrive as refreshed as you were when you stepped on board. The fact that this vessel does not go through the waves but skims over them allows the passengers a ride that is safe and comfortable. The Oil & Gas industry are now using hovercrafts to deliver their crews instead of Crew Boats as the hovercrafts are faster and a lot more comfortable.

This model has the facility to transport 24 passengers as well as the Pilot and one member of crew. The cabin provides a degree of luxury not expected in such a fast vessel. It is fully air conditioned, has a fully equipped galley with fridge, microwave oven, sink with fold down lid. It also has a 25 Ltr hot water heater in the toilet, shower and washbasin.

Strip lighting overhead and on the floor is provided. Two access doors are place on each side of the vessel to allow for easy ingress and egress from the vessel. Overhead stowage compartment with openings large enough to stow hand luggage only. The interior roof and walls of the saloon is lined with sound absorbing material. This make for lower cabin noise and a more comfortable ride.

Decking Equipment

Mooring: At the bow of the vessel is a locker that houses the anchor rope and chain, 100 metres, and emergency danforth anchor. A Vetus hydraulic windlass is fitted to retrieve the anchor and chain. There are two flush mount pop up type cleats either side of the bow and two at either side of the stern of the vessel to allow the vessel to be tied up to a jetty or wharf. Fender holders are also fitted on either side of the vessel to protect the deck from damage when moored.
