REGULATIONS, CERTIFICATION & DOCUMENTATION
The lifeboat is a Totally Enclosed Lifeboat/Rescue Boat and is designed, built and fitted out according to latest SOLAS (Safety of Lives at Sea) Regulations. The lifeboat also complies with the regulations allowing it to act as a Rescue Boat when installed on a suitable MSD Davit System. The Standard documentation package includes an operation, maintenance and survival manual. Also included is verification and certification from a third party classification society.
HULL, SUPERSTRUCTURE & INNER LINER
The hull, superstructure and inner liner are individually moulded from GRP using a combination of hand lay up and automated application. The three components are then assembled to form a double skinned watertight unit. The exterior has a gel coat that is high visibility International Orange and the interior is light grey. The buoyancy compartments are filled with polyurethane foam and are positioned between the inner liner and the exterior. The boat has sufficient buoyancy to self-right when fully loaded and in the flooded condition.
SAFELAUNCH Release Gear Mechanism
SAFELAUNCH Stainless Steel Release Gear is fitted as standard to the Survival Craft range of lifeboats. SAFELAUNCH Release Gear is an onload release gear fitted with a hydrostatic interlock valve to prevent against accidental release. SAFELAUNCH is operated by a control release handle, which is mounted at the coxswain’s position. The control release handle is designed to release both hooks simultaneously when the lifeboat is fully waterborne. SAFELAUNCH hook assemblies can be locked by inserting the unique green safety pin during abandon ship drills and regular maintenance. Once inserted the green safety pin prevents the risk of accidental release.
AIR SUPPLY SYSTEM
The lifeboat has a self-contained air support system, which is arranged so that when during operation with all entrances and hatches closed and the engine running, the air in the lifeboat remains safe and breathable for at least 10 minutes.
OUTFITTING
The following items are supplied as standard but non-standard equipment and fittings are also available upon request:
•All SOLAS loose equipment. Provisions (Food & Water) and pyrotechnics will be supplied upon request.
•Rubber fendering and skates
•Compressed air cylinder
•Watertight lockers for storage of provisions

•Vessel or platform call sign or name marked on outer canopy
•Retro reflective tapes fitted to top and sides of outer canopy
•Designed for use in Arctic conditions.
SEATING ARRANGEMENT
Individual seating positions are identified by the seat indicators provided, while alternating coloured seatbelts allow clear and easy identification of seating during embarkation.
MATERIALS
The lifeboat is designed for use in harsh conditions and the materials of construction have been chosen for their resistance to the corrosive marine environment and to ensure a long and trouble free life with minimal maintenance. All metal fittings and fixtures are either stainless steel, brass, hot dipped Galvanised steel or marine grade aluminium. The Hull, Canopy, Seating, Hatches and Lockers are all made from GRP.

•Operational Range Max List - 20º, Max Trim - 10º
REGULATIONS, CERTIFICATION & DOCUMENTATION
The MSD138 Davit conforms to the design criteria laid down in the latest 1996 amendments to SOLAS 1974. Certification from most international inspection bodies is available, for example, ABS, DNV, MSA, BV, GL, LR and the EU mark. Documentation is provided according to standard IMO requirements in English language. The standard documentation package consists of a set of working and final drawings, operating manual and verification certification from a third party.
COMPONENT PARTS
Each davit comprises the following components:
•2 x Davit Arms
•1 x Davit Frame
•2 x Floating Blocks
•1 set Gripe Lashings
•1 set Fastenings
•1 x Remote Control Unit
•1 set Fall Wires
•2 x Limit Switches
•1 x Winch
•1 x Electrical Box
CONSTRUCTION AND OPERATING PRINCIPLES
The MSD138 Davit, when combined with a suitable winch, is constructed from materials and components designed to ensure safe and reliable operation in the harsh and corrosive marine environment. The davit system has two pivoted arms and an electrically powered winch with two drums that operate the two fall wires.
To launch the boat the winch brake must first be released. This can be done manually or remotely by pulling on a stainless steel wire from within the boat. When the brake is released the winch pays out wire from the drums and allows the twin davit arms to deploy to the outboard position. The floating block automatically disconnects from the davit arms and the centrifugal brake lowers the boat into the water at a controlled speed.
A standard winch is capable of retrieving the lifeboat in light condition. An uprated winch is available which will allow a fully loaded lifeboat to be recovered. When the start button on the electric control box is pressed, the winch will begin hoisting the lifeboat. As the lifeboat is hoisted, the floating blocks automatically secure into the davit arms, the davit arms are lifted and the limit switches stop the winch. The lifeboat can then be manually bowsed in and stowed ready for future deployment.
SAFETY FEATURES
The MSD138 Davit system has a number of key safety features:
•Centrifugal Brake - the oil cooled centrifugal brake allows controlled deployment of the lifeboat.
•Dead Man Electrical Controls – as soon as the start button is released, the hoisting of the lifeboat is stopped.
•Manual Winch – in case of power failure, it is possible to manually hoist the lifeboat by using the hand crank.
•Overload Protection – the electrical relay system incorporates an automatic safety cut out that operates if the load on the winch exceeds the Safe Working Load.
•Limit Switches – Over- winching of the lifeboat is prevented by electrical limit switches, which stop the winch as soon as the lifeboat reaches the desired height.
•Fail Safe Brake – the winch has a one-way brake to ensure fail-safe operation during launching.
FIRE PROTECTION
The lifeboat has a water spray fire-protection system through a stainless steel pipe work that is powered by a self-priming engine driven pump. The intake for the pump is at the lowest possible level in order to avoid the risk of drawing in flammable liquids from the sea surface. The system can be flushed with fresh water and completely drained.
