Engines

MAIN ENGINE
The Naval Architect for this vessel has designed it specifically for use on snow and ice and as such has TWO not one engine for the power. The vessel can if you wish operate on just one engine but has the option of TWO x 6-cylinders, water cooled, turbo charged, inter cooled diesel engines of 175 kW output fitted. Each engine can be run independently of the other. The Hovercraft can operate using one engine alone, providing lift and thrust. The engines are manufactured by Steyr Motors in Austria and are used in Military Vehicles as well as marine craft.

FUEL : 800 litres Diesel

FAN DUCT
The ducts are manufactured from E glass and Kevlar and are 1.6 metres internal diameter. The 6 bladed axial fans provide the thrust. At the outlet of the fan ducts is fitted five steering rudders and one elevator. These provide steering and longitudinal control. Each fan is driven by a tooth belt drive from one of the diesel engines. There is a clutch that can disengage the fan drive from the diesel engine.

LIFT FAN
Two centrifugal fans provide the lift. The casing of which is manufactured from Kevlar/carbon fibre. The impeller and shaft is stainless steel. Two small hydraulic motors drive each of the fans. The speed of the fans can be varied independent of engine RPM and a tachometer is fitted to each of the fans so that the speed can be monitored at the helm station. Constant pressure Hydraulic pumps are fitted to each of the diesel engines.

ENGINE ROOM AND INSTALLATION:
The main engines are mounted on a Sub-frame for ease of removal for major maintenance. Rubber isolation mountings are incorporated to reduce vibration. Exhaust system has insulation to avoid possible fire damage and the outlets are through the rear deck and insulated also.
Ample space in the engine room is provided to allow for easy access to and around the engines for service and maintenance.
Poly-chain GT Kevlar toothed belts drive the thrust fans. It uses a soft clutch to engage and disengage.

The sub-frame and fan ducts can be removed as a unit or separately
Engine room contains all hydraulic systems and is appropriately ventilated to ensure proper operation of all equipment and a comfortable environment for maintenance personnel.
Provided with automatic sump pumps with alarm and manual override additionally a manual sump pump is provided.
An escape hatch is provided to provide emergency exit from the engine room

The engine room is insulated with noise absorbing material and surface is coated with fire retardant gel coat. There are two 3-kilogram Co2 fire extinguishers mounted at the entrance to the engine room that are connected to the flooding system for the engine space. Fire Alarm fitted in the engine space that displays an audible alarm at the helm station. The Co2 system can be operated from outside the engine room. The engine room allows easy access to service and maintain the machinery.

AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM:
The air conditioning system consists of compressors driven off the main propulsion engines and an overhead Evaporator unit located in the cabin.
Controls for Air conditioning system are located on the operators’ console

BALLAST/FUEL SYSTEM:
4 fuel tanks are positioned at 4 “corners” of the hull, and are interconnected with a manifold.
A high-speed transfer pump can transfer fuel between all tanks to aid trim.

BALLAST/WATER SYSTEM:
The Ballast water tanks are positioned forward and aft
High speed transfer pumps are provided to transfer ballast to adjust the trim
Emergency dump valve fitted

ENGINE ROOM EXTINGUISHERS:
Fire monitoring of the engine room is displayed on the bridge. A Co2 Flooding system is fitted which is operated from the bridge and will flood the engine space.

CONTROL SYSTEMS:
The control systems are a “fly by wire type”.
The steering yoke controls the rudders, also fitted to the steering handles are the engine speed controls and Elevator control.
A dead man shut off switch is incorporated in the instrument panel in case of emergency.
Foot operated clutch for main fans.
The lift fans speed controls are Electro-hydraulic.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS:
All systems duplicated 12V DC / 220V AC.
220 V AC 1.5kw Inverter is fitted to the craft.
2 Gel cell Batteries are connected in Parallel to provide engine starting and auxiliary power for the vessel
2 X 65 Amp alternators, powered by main engines.
Two starting batteries are isolated from the auxiliary power system so that they are always available for starting.
All batteries are charge from the main engines once underway
The inverter/ charger can charge the batteries from shore power.
All duplicated wiring to Lloyd’s specifications, with appropriate circuit breakers and standard coded wiring.
Switchboards are fitted with Heinemann Circuit breakers on all circuits
All Switchboards are housed in waterproof lockable compartments.
220v Power outlets are provided in the cabin, these are fitted in waterproof compartments. This allows the operation of 220v appliances.

Construction

The 9M PATROL HOVERCRAFT is a fully amphibious hovercraft capable of carrying 3000 Kg payload and 8 passengers or combination of both, plus one crew. Powered by 2 Steyr Liquid cooled Intercooled Turbo diesel engines; driving 2 x 1.65 metre 5 bladed-ducted Kevlar/ carbon solid cored fans power this craft. 2 hydraulic motors drive the centrifugal fans that provide the lift for this craft. The lift fan speed can be varied independently of the engine speed.

The Hull and Superstructure are constructed using Core Sandwich composite technology. This provides a lightweight and a long service life vessel. The Manufacturer provides a warranty on the Hull Structure for a period 10 years and materials used in the Hull construction are warranted for 25 years (certain conditions apply and are detailed in the warranty document supplied with the hovercraft). In various parts of the hull structure Kevlar/Carbon/E-glass are used in conjunction with Vinyl Ester resin. This resin is impervious to Osmosis and is unaffected by high salinity. The core material used is rigid PVC foam, which is closed cell and does not rot or break down over time. The core sandwich panels are vacuumed bagged and post cured for maximum strength to weight ratio.

In this context, Advanced Composites and Advanced Composite modified designs are preferred by Classification Society Surveyors with Hovercraft experience and organizations like the U.S. Coastguard, who have issued many urgent warnings about the structural integrity of aluminium and modified aluminium hovercraft.
